How to Start a Range Rover Sport When Your Key Fob Won't Work

If your Range Rover Sport won't start and the dashboard shows Smart Key Not Found or Key Not Detected, you're not alone. There are three emergency start methods you can try right now.

Method 1: Use the Emergency Key Blade

Every Range Rover Sport smart key has a hidden mechanical blade inside the fob. Pull it out, insert it into the hidden keyhole behind the driver's door handle cover, unlock the door, then insert the fob into the emergency start slot in the centre console and press Start.

Method 2: Hold the Fob Against the Start Button

On 2018+ models, hold the Land Rover logo side of the fob flat against the Start/Stop button. The car reads the chip even with a flat battery. Hold for 2-3 seconds, then press the button with the fob still touching it.

Method 3: Release the Steering Lock

If the engine won't crank and you see a steering lock warning, gently wiggle the steering wheel left and right while pressing Start. The electronic steering lock sometimes binds and needs slight wheel movement to release.

Why Won't My Range Rover Sport Start?

1. Dead Key Fob Battery

The most common cause. Replace the CR2032 battery (about R30). If it still won't start after a battery swap, the fob may have lost its programming.

2. KVM Module Failure (2013-2018 Models)

The Keyless Vehicle Module is the receiver that talks to your key fob. On 2013-2018 Range Rover Sport models, water ingress into the rear bumper corrodes the KVM, causing permanent Smart Key Not Found errors. We replace and reprogram the KVM on-site.

3. Flat Vehicle Battery

If the battery is below 12V, the smart key system won't initialise. Jump-start or charge the battery, then retry.

4. Key Fob Lost Programming

Smart keys can lose pairing after a flat vehicle battery or jump-start. The fob needs reprogramming with OEM-level diagnostic equipment.

How Much Will It Cost to Fix?

  • Dead fob battery: R30 (DIY)
  • Key reprogramming: R1,500-R3,500 on-site
  • New spare key cut and programmed: R3,500-R8,500
  • KVM module replacement: R6,000-R12,000
  • All keys lost (full generation from VIN): R8,000-R16,500
