The Land Rover Discovery 5 (the L494 generation, sold from 2017 onwards) is one of the most popular family 4x4s in South Africa. It's also one of the most common vehicles we're called out to for key problems. Whether you need a spare, you've lost every key, or the car is refusing to recognise a working fob, this guide explains exactly what's involved, what it costs, and how mobile key replacement works across SA.
Which key does your Discovery 5 use?
The Discovery 5 uses a proximity smart key (push-button start, keyless entry). There are two key generations to know about:
- 2017 model year — the earlier proximity key fob, used on the launch L494.
- 2018 onwards (2018-2024) — the revised proximity key introduced with the mid-life facelift. This is the fob most Discovery 5 owners have.
If you're not sure which year your car is, check the VIN build date or your registration document — the two fobs look similar but are not interchangeable. We carry images of both so you can match yours before we arrive.
What does a Land Rover Discovery 5 key replacement cost in South Africa?
Pricing depends on the year and whether you still have a working key. Our mobile Discovery 5 key replacement starts from:
- 2017 — from R5,600 (spare), all-keys-lost priced on inspection.
- 2018 — from R6,000.
- 2019-2025 — from R13,000 (later security architecture requires more programming time).
These are honest, all-in mobile prices — no hidden call-out fees, no "we'll tell you when we get there" surprises. A dealership typically charges 40-60% more and requires you to tow the vehicle in. We come to you and program the key on-site with OEM-level diagnostic equipment.
All keys lost for your Discovery 5 — how it works
Losing every key to a Discovery 5 is more involved than a simple spare, but it is absolutely fixable without towing. Our process:
- VIN-based key generation — we generate a new key from scratch using your vehicle's VIN through secure dealer-level access.
- On-site programming — the new fob is programmed to the car's immobiliser and keyless system at your home, office or roadside.
- Full testing — we confirm push-button start, keyless entry and the immobiliser all work before we leave.
Most all-keys-lost jobs are completed in 60-90 minutes on-site.
Common Discovery 5 key faults we fix
- "Smart Key Not Found" — usually a fob battery or internal fob fault, occasionally a receiver module issue.
- Fob battery drain — a flat fob that works only when held against the start button.
- Lost spare — adding a second working key while you still have one is far cheaper than all-keys-lost.
Why choose mobile replacement over a dealership?
You don't tow a Discovery 5 to a dealer and wait two weeks. We bring manufacturer-level diagnostics to your driveway, complete the job same-day, and typically save you 40-60%. Every key carries a 12-month guarantee and the work is insurance-approved.
